Services
Therapeutic programme
In addition to the pharmacological detoxification and stabilization, patients are offered a variety of activities and group work sessions to meet the aims and objectives of Hafan Wen and it’s Mission Statement. Activities and group work sessions are optional but all patients are offered the opportunity to attend. Due to the short length of stay, in-depth psychological and psychotherapeutic interventions are not initiated, although referral to counselling may be initiated during their stay and commenced following discharge. Individual 1 to1 Sessions (Key-working)
On admission each patient is allocated a staff nurse as their Key worker for the duration of their stay at Hafan Wen. The Key worker will act as the care co-ordinator for the patient whilst at Hafan Wen to ensure that the care provided by relevant services is co-ordinated to provide a comprehensive and integrated approach. The treatment at Hafan Wen may be provided by a range of professionals and from more than one service at the same time. Click on the link to download further details on the Key Worker sessions.
Patient Workbook
This work book has been compiled by drawing from evidence based theoretical models used in the treatment of drug and alcohol misuse.
The ‘Functional Approach’ is a behavioural model that enables the client to gain insight into the “function” that drugs and alcohol plays in their lives. This approach is drawn from Social Learning Theory and sees all behaviour as serving a purpose, e.g. people who use drugs or alcohol have chosen to do so in order to gain or avoid something in their lives.
Drinking and drug taking can be functional in a number of areas of a person’s life;
Social - using to socialise through gaining confidence, “fitting in”, avoiding inhibitions and damping down negative self-beliefs.
Emotional - using to alter feelings and intensity of feelings, as a way to self sooth, and to change physical sensations.
Physiological - using for the pharmacological effects of the substance and also to reduce and avoid withdrawal symptoms if dependent. (Marlatt, 1985)
At Hafan Wen the clients are invited to access groups, activities, and Key Worker sessions. All of which will enable clients to see what is gained and avoided by using drugs or alcohol, and identify situations, thoughts and emotions that underlie use. From this the Key Worker and client can begin to understand the reason for the substance use (The Function of Use).
The ‘Cycle of Change Model’ by Prochaska and Di-Clementi (1986) lends a significant contribution to this work book in that it informs clients of the process of change, and enables them to identify their own position within the process.
‘Relapse Prevention’ is a self-management programme designed to enhance the maintenance stage of the change process (Marlatt, 1985). The aim of this work book and the relapse prevention group work offered at Hafan Wen is to empower and motivate clients throughout the course of their treatment and the change process. Individuals who are trying to change their alcohol or drug related lifestyle will be taught how to anticipate and cope with the problem of relapse, and to make informed choices regarding their future.
